The Images on Your Website Matter
The human brain processes visuals up to 60,000 times faster than text.
Hi reader,
“A picture is worth a thousand words” might be a cliché, but there’s a reason you’ve heard it a thousand times. People process images faster than text, and they tend to remember what they see more than what they read.
That’s why the images on your website are so important. But I see so many websites using the same generic stock photos – smiling customer service reps with headsets, random office meetings, perfectly staged handshakes.
The problem is that these images don’t tell people anything about who you are or what you do. Let’s unpack this a bit more.
Today’s advice to grow your business
Choose website images that represent your brand.
The images on your website should make it clear what your business is all about. If your work is centered around people (like coaching, therapy, or personal services), use photos that feel real and relatable. If you don’t have photos of your actual team, choose high-quality images or graphics that gel with your brand’s personality.
For product-based businesses, I highly recommend getting professional photos taken. Blurry, poorly lit pictures can turn away potential customers fast. If you can show your products in action, that’s even better.
If you want to take things to the next level, you can also consider using videos. But again, it needs to make sense for what you do. One of my clients, a real estate company, uses drone footage of a desirable neighborhood. This is super effective because it’s aspirational for their target audience, who can instantly picture themselves living there.
Here’s how this will benefit you
Your brand will stick in people’s minds.
The human brain processes visuals up to 60,000 times faster than text. That means people will form an impression of your brand in seconds, before they even read a single word. Strong, relevant images help cement that impression, making your business easier to recognize and remember.
Think about the last time you scrolled through a website. Did you memorize the text, or do you mostly remember how it looked? If your website is full of generic photos or low-quality images, there’s nothing to make you stand out. But when your visuals are refreshing and really speak to your brand, you create a strong mental snapshot. And when potential customers need what you offer, they’ll think of you first.
Images guide visitors to take action.
People don’t read websites like a book – they scan. Their eyes jump to whatever stands out first, and that’s almost always an image.
Once they see an image, their brain instantly starts processing what it means. If the image clicks with what they’re looking for, it builds confidence. It reassures them they’re in the right place and your product is worth buying.
On the flip side, bad visuals (or worse, no visuals) can have the opposite effect. A blurry product shot makes people question quality. A stiff, fake-looking photo can make a business feel impersonal or outdated.
But when your images actually show what you do, who you are, or what you’re selling in a clear way, people don’t have to second-guess. They’ll feel more confident hitting that “buy” button, booking a call, or taking the next step.
Your first step
Take a look at your website and ask yourself: Do these images actually represent my business?
Pull up your homepage and scroll through it like a first-time visitor. Do the images give a clear sense of what you do? Do they feel aligned with your brand, or could they belong to just about anyone? If something feels off, it’s time to swap them out for something better.
Strong images can make all the difference in how people perceive your business, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to audit what you’re using. Good luck, and let me know if you need any help!
Best,
Jono
